Oxelbarrow's Core Functions for Organising Information

Oxelbarrow provides a defined set of tools for classifying, arranging, and reviewing digital content. This page describes each function and how it fits into the overall organisation process.

Function overview

What the system provides

Each function within Oxelbarrow serves a distinct role in the information-organisation process. They are designed to work in sequence — from initial classification through to detailed review and follow-up — or independently, depending on how a user's access is configured.

Content Classification

Items within the system are assigned to categories based on their type, topic, or defined attributes. Classification may be applied automatically for supported content types, or manually confirmed by the user during a review session. Categories are fixed within the current configuration, providing a stable reference framework.

Session-Based Review

Users can open and resume review sessions across multiple visits to the system. Progress is retained within the session structure, allowing users to move through a category at their own pace. Session data does not carry over automatically between categories unless the access configuration supports it.

Structured Information Display

Individual content items are presented within a consistent display framework that highlights key attributes and provides clear navigation between related items. The display layout does not change between sessions, reducing the time needed to reorient with each new visit.

Category Navigation

The category navigation system allows users to move between top-level groupings and sub-categories without losing their position in the current review. Breadcrumb indicators show the current location within the category structure, and a summary panel shows the number of items in each grouping.

Annotation and Flagging

During a review session, users can apply flags and short annotations to items for later reference. Flagged items can be filtered and reviewed as a separate group, making it easier to return to items that require follow-up or further attention. Annotations remain visible within the same session.

Enquiry and Access Management

Users submit access requests and follow-up questions through the enquiry form. The support team reviews each submission and responds with confirmation, clarification, or updated access details. This function is the primary means of communication between users and the Oxelbarrow support team.

Using the functions

A typical review workflow

The functions within Oxelbarrow are designed to support a practical review workflow. Users do not need to engage every function in a single session — the system is built to accommodate focused, incremental review over time.

A typical session begins with category navigation to locate the relevant group of items, moves into structured review of individual content, and ends with flagging items that need follow-up. The enquiry function is used when a user needs clarification from the support team.
